Archdiocesan policy states that formal instruction for the Sacrament of Eucharist should be separate and distinct from preparation for first reception of Reconciliation so that the integrity of each sacrament is maintained. Parents have a right and a duty to be intimately involved in preparing their child for the Sacrament of Eucharist. They should continue their own growth in faith, model Christian practices and frequently and regularly participate in Sunday Eucharist.
Children wishing to receive Eucharist for the first time will:
Be in the second grade or higher
Child must actively participated in faith formation (parish, school, homeschool) for at least one year immediately before going through the preparation process.
Child must be actively participating in faith formation (parish, school, homeschool) while going through the preparation process.
Complete the work in the sacrament book with the parent or guardian at home.
Attend both First Communion sessions and First Communion retreat
Know their prayers
Have been prepared for their First Reconciliation
Parents will:
Complete the sacrament book with the child at home. The child and at least one parent must attend all sessions and sacrament retreat.

STUDENTSATTENDINGCATHOLICSCHOOLStudents who attend a Catholic school are not required to attend CCE classes in order to receive a Sacrament at St. Matthias. Parents and students, however, are required to complete the Sacramental preparation work and turn the completed work in to the RE office.
